Built as a coaching inn and set amongst beautiful historic gardens, Riversdale later became home to former district surveyor and later NSW Surveyor -General, Edward Twynam and his family, who then occupied the property for almost 100 years prior to its purchase by the National Trust. Standing within its original paddocks and outbuildings (some from the early 1830s), "Riversdale" is a fine example of a colonial Georgian home surrounded by splendid gardens and picnic grounds, renowned for its collection of fine Australian Colonial furniture and arts and craft.
Take a house tour and step back in time through over 170 years of our proud history. After that, explore award-winning restored gardens and investigate the displays of early colonial working life in the historic outbuildings. You can meet and talk to the volunteers who lovingly bring it all to life - even choose from the many potted plants for sale, propagated from the garden and grown carefully on site for our local conditions.
The "Riversdale" Gift Shop is a great way to support its local heritage and help protect one of Australia's precious assets. Not only will you find a selection of official National Trust items, but also:
A range of history, gardening and entertainment books for adults and kids alike
" Linen Press" range of homewares and toiletry products
Local artisan woodwork and jewellery
Jams, preserves and chutneys made on site with produce from the historic garden
"Riversdale" and National Trust souvenirs
Tours of the fabulous gardens are also available.
Devonshire Tea is held on the 3rd Sunday of each month.
Riversdale is a beautiful place to have a picnic or to hold a function such as weddings, christenings, parties and special family photos.
